Personal Story - Fran Clark

The Power of Prayer

I was on my way to work early one morning in the dead of winter with snow covering the ground. I had to travel approximately twenty miles each way, so I took the back roads to cut down on traffic and stoplights I had a four-wheel-drive SUV so I never worried about getting stuck in the snow. Well, this one particular morning my vehicle stalled out on me. I never expected this to happen because it was a fairly new vehicle. I had never had problems with it in the past.

I tried over and over to start the engine but it wouldnt turn over.

As I was trying to start it I remembered that we were encouraged by our fellowship coordinator to always be prepared physically in the winter months for this kind of event.  We were told to always keep warm clothing, blankets, boots, cap, gloves, etc., in our vehicles.  Because it was reliable in the past, I didn't think I needed to keep all these items in my vehicle.  There I was, faced with a dangerous situation, stalled on a lonely country road with houses approximately two miles apart.  It was still dark at six o'clock in the morning and no one was around.  I started to feel frightened, upset and cold.

Realizing my vehicle wasn't going to start, I forced myself to think about what to do next.  I decided to get quiet and peaceful in my mind and heart.  I started praying, asking God to help me in this situation.  I didn't know what was wrong with my vehicle; why wouldn't it turn over?  I reminded myself that speaking in tongues is perfect prayer and that it covers details of a need that I sometimes don't know.  So I started speaking in tongues and believing that God would get me out of this situation.

Within a few minutes I turned the key again and it started right up as if nothing was ever wrong with it!  I drove all the way to work thanking God.  As soon as I pulled up to the curb at work, it died on me again.  However, by my believing and praying, God saw to it that I got to work safe and on time.  Later that morning I called and had my vehicle towed to the shop to be repaired.  After a few days in the shop I had a reliable vehicle again.

This was a wake-up call for me.  When exhorted by our coordinators to be prepared in any situation, I have learned to listen and do.  I am thankful for our leadership and their guidance.  I am also thankful for God and His grace, mercy, and goodness.  I was rescued that day and I will continue to serve my Heavenly Father.  I have also come to realize that, the more I study God's Word, the more I can claim the power God has given me.  I have learned that there is great power in prayer as we continue to believe and act on the Word we know. God does answer prayers.
