Jesus Christ Our Passover
A Review by Elizabeth Everson
The book, Jesus Christ Our Passover by Dr. Victor Paul Wierwille, is a detailed look at the last two months of Jesus Christ's life.
I grew up in this ministry, but I had never read this book in its entirety. In fact, I hadn't read much of it until March of 2004. I've never been much of a reader. When I did read, it was a very slow process. Needless to say, this big red book seemed very overwhelming.
Last year, I had the awesome privilege to live with my parents again. One day after fellowship in February, a few of us were talking about the "Passion of Christ" that would soon be hitting the theaters. I confessed that I hadn't read this book because it just seemed too big. Another in our fellowship said she felt the same. My parents later talked about it, and offered a "Jesus Christ Our Passover" Study Group for anyone in their branch who was interested. This study group broke the book into bite size pieces which made it approachable.
My mother charged each of us to set goals for the study group. I had a few:
- Read the whole book.
- Love people bigger.
- See God's love for us bigger.
- Get more comfortable and faster at reading.
- Handle death better. (Going into the study group, when someone passed away, it hit me very hard. So much so that I couldn't minister to the hearts of those in need.)
I met each goal! But reading it did so much more for me. It strengthened me. I used to get depressed when I was home alone. My husband Dan went away for 7 months with the USAF shortly after we moved to Dayton, Ohio (September 2004). I knew that I grew a lot while Dan and I were living with my folks in D.C., but I didn't know how much until I had to prove it. My goal while Dan was gone was to not be a basket case. Well, not only was I not a basket case, I did very well.
Seeing Jesus Christ's love for us helped put things in perspective. The teachings in our ministry are great, but you get so much more out of it when you study it for yourself. Like I said, I was raised in this ministry, so I've heard these teachings all of my life, but they never really hit home until I read this book for myself. Jesus Christ didn't just give his life for us, but he willingly took the beatings. I saw a whole new meaning of the phrase, “It is finished” during this two month study group. During the 24 hours of torture, when Jesus had fallen to the ground, he kept pulling himself back up for more! By doing this, he was asking for more. Had he not done that, our redemption would not have been complete. He was an amazing man who loved us more that I can comprehend.
If you haven't read Jesus Christ Our Passover yet, or haven't read it in awhile, I encourage you to do so: It will bless your life tremendously!
God bless you,
Elizabeth
