In our western culture, our personal name is important to us, but usually the meaning of our names is unknown and unimportant. In the Bible, the names have meaning, and are important. Here are a few examples of God giving names to elements of His creation.

• Gen. 1:5a And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night.
• Gen. 1:8a And God called the firmament Heaven.
• Gen. 1:10a And God called the dry land Earth;

Psalms 147:4 He teleth the number of the stars; he caleth them all by their names.

There are other examples in the Bible of God giving names to people, or changing their names. He named his son, Jesus Christ, and He named John the baptist.
