Holy Land Satellite Help

System Requirements:

1. Screen Resolution 1024x768 or higher is best with window maximized. The program will run at 800 x 600 resolution if the window is run in full screen mode by pressing the F11 key.

2. A javascript-enabled web browser capable of interpreting Cascading Style Sheets coding is necessary to use most of the program features and menus. This includes Internet Explorer 5 and above and Firefox 1.5 and above.

This is a very simple program whose operation should be fairly intuitive. Click on a place name on any map zoom level and you will see a page with a Photo and description of the location and significance of the site. If a scripture reference is listed in the narrative, it will be a link to the King James version of the bible. Click on the link to read the referenced verse. Click your browser <back> arrow to return to the place description page..

When the 100%, 75%, 50%, or 25% zoom levels are displayed, the menus along the top of the screen display lists of cities and landforms. Click on a city name and the map will automatically center over the city, making it easier to find. You may also scroll the maps manually by using the scrollbars at the bottom and right side of the screen. The precise location of each city is under the very tip of the carat symbol (^, or < ) at one end of the place name.

For the centering function to work accurately, your viewing window must be maximized. If you also use the full-screen view by selecting it in your browser menu or by clicking F11, you will see the most accurate centering when a city name is clicked. If a city is near the edge of the map image, the centering function will scroll to the edges of the image in an attempt to center the city name, however it may not be completely centered.

The map has a floating menu that always stays at the top left of the screen when the large map is scrolled vertically and horizontally. There are five zoom levels to the map, with the largest providing a 7200 x 5400 pixel image size, and the smallest being the 900 pixel wide image on the main page. The images cover the area from Mt Hermon on the North to the Dead Sea to the South.

The menu on the opening page shows only a Zoom and a Help menu. When one of the zoom levels is clicked, a larger image appears with the full menu of Cities and Landforms, as below.

When a placename is clicked in the menu, the map automatically centers over the placename, to make it easier to find. Clicking on the name on the map causes a page to pop up (like En Harod, below) with a narrative describing the site, one or more photos and links to scriptures referenced in the narrative. Clicking on a scripture link opens a page of the King James Version of the Holy Bible with the referenced verse at the top of the page.

The program is downloadable in two different forms. The first is HLSAT.exe. This version will automatically install the program after you click on it and grant permission.

The second format is for experienced users who don't wish to use an install program and know how to use their file system. It is as a ZIP archive, HLSAT.zip. This may be installed using WinZip or other software into the folder of your choice with the "Use Folder Names" option selected. Then you may create a shortcut to the main file "index.htm" and put it on your desktop or other location.

The program is copyrighted freeware and may be distributed freely , but may not be sold or included in any package for which a fee is charged.

The satellite images were constructed from LandSat images that were post processed and made available for use by the GAIA Lab at Arizona State University.

The remaining place descriptions were taken from public domain and other sources which provide automatic approval for non-commercial use.

As always, the program is not guaranteed to work on your particular computer. Javascript is used for autoscrolling and CSS is used for the menus, so your web browser must be able to handle these.. It works best with 1024 x 768 screen resolution or higher and 512 megabytes of memory, but will work with 800 x 600 screen resolution and 256 megabytes of memory if the instructions in the Help menu are followed.. It has been tested with Win XP with sp2, Internet Explorer versions 6 and 7, Avant Browser, and Firefox version 1.5.
